FACT version of Corsika/MMCS in SVN

Description

Recently I got asked, where in the FACT SVN one can find the version of Corsika/MMCS we are using.

I had no answer to that question, so I checked it in in r18024 into this place:
https://trac.fact-project.org/browser/trunk/mmcs6500

In order to successfully install/use this version, please refer to the README file.

In order to quickly get Corsika running, one needs some binary tables, which are generated by Corsika at its very first run, in case they are missing, it takes an entire day or even longer (I didn't measure the time).
So the file should be provided as well. As a courtesy to the end user say.

But since it can be generated, it should imho not be versioned, so I've put it here
http://fact-project.org/mmcs6500_bin/
for easy download.

The file should be downloaded into the mmcs6500 folder, be unzipped, and one is ready to go... I will put this information into a README file as well.

For propoer installation of this corsika version, fluka is needed to be downloaded from http://www.fluka.org/fluka.php and installed prior to building mmcs6500. I think this is not mentioned properly in the README as well.

So I propose to rewrite the README for FACTies, after that, I think this ticket can be closed ...

I might do it in a few hours, but I wanted to get this checked in and done as quickly as possible.

Hi Dominik,

this is NOT a good idea. MMCS is MAGIC software and our svn is publicly accessible.

cheers,
Daniela

Hello Daniela,

thank you, I was not aware of this. I deleted the code from the SVN repo immediately.

This problem opens these questions now for me:

  • is the FACT collaboration allowed to use MMCS?
    • if so, we should communicate FACT-publicly where to get the sources of MMCS?
    • if not, don't we have a problem then?
  • Why is MAGIC not making MMCS public software? (we can't answer that, of course)

Cheers
Dominik

Resolution: wontfix
Status: newclosed

I close this ticket, since we can't change MAGIC software publication policies.

Dear Dominik,

apart from the fact that even "deleting" something from svn does not really make it unaccessible (that is the basic idea of svn that it never forgets), I suggest to find the differences between MMCS and Corsika (to my understanding nowadays it is less than a few lines of code) and create our self-maintained version of Corsika.

Thomas.

Hi,

I think we had quite often already the discussion whether not to switch to Corsika completely.
We still wanted to clarify several things concerning this:

  • what are exactly the differences? eg does corsika store the photons on the ground or the mirror plane?
  • does ceres read corsika output?

At least the last was tested by chance: Recently Watz tried reading in corsika files with ceres and this did not work. For more details, you have to ask Watz.

cheers,
Dani
